Dell PowerEdge R760 Server Technical Overview

Powered by Intel's’ latest 4th Gen Xeon Scalable processors, the PowerEdge R760 offers robust performance and scalability with support for up to 56 cores per socket – that’s an additional 16 cores per socket compared to Intel’s 3rd Gen Xeon processors. Because of this, the R760 delivers exceptional compute power, making it suitable for intensive workloads, virtualization, and data analytics tasks.
The R760 supports a wide range of storage options, including the usual SATA or SAS3 drives. However, for more demanding workloads this server is capable of supporting 24Gb SAS drives, NVMe U.2 Gen4 drives, or even NVMe E3.S Gen5 drives, thus allowing organizations to tailor their storage configurations to meet their specific needs. Now, this innovative storage technology wouldn’t be possible without a new family of PERC behind it, so it’s only fitting that the R760 debuts the PERC Series 12 (PERC12), headlined by the powerful H965i RAID controller. I won’t bore you with all the details, but just know that a single one of these hardware RAID controllers is capable of RAIDing both 24Gb SAS4 drives and NVMe drives – and it doesn’t even take up a PCIe slot!
In terms of memory, the R760 and the entire 16G PowerEdge portfolio offer impressive capabilities with Dell’s introduction of DDR5 memory. The R760 supports up to 32 DDR5 DIMM slots, allowing for a maximum memory capacity of up to 8 terabytes. If you’re not familiar with the technology, DDR5 incorporates much higher bandwidth compared to DDR4, as well as increased bandwidth efficiency and even supports a maximum density of 32Gb. In other words, Dell’s use of DDR5 ensures that even the most memory-intensive applications can run smoothly without compromising performance.
Networking is a critical aspect of any modern data center, and the PowerEdge R760 has you covered in this regard as well. It features integrated NIC speeds of up to 25GbE and PCIe NIC options of up to 100Gbe, providing flexible connectivity options to match even the most daunting networking requirements. With its advanced networking capabilities, the R760 enables seamless communication and data transfer within your infrastructure.
Combining the integrated OCP slots with up to 8 Gen5 + Gen4 PCIe slots, the R760 allows you to populate 4x 100Gb + 4x 25Gb + 2x 1Gb + iDRAC port, in just these slots alone (red area in picture below), allowing you to have the complete top half of the server (green area in picture below) to install whatever you need! The system also is one of Dell’s flagship GPU-enabled solutions, allowing up to 2 x 350W Double-wide and up to 6 x 75W Single-wide accelerators. As indicated by the orange tabs, the R760 is equipped with dual, hot-swappable power supplies with wattages up to 2800W per PSU.
