Primary Controller (RAID)
With the complexity and risk of upgrading a RAID controller, it is important to start with a quality controller so you can achieve maximum IOPS and strong data reliability.
(Learn More)
SAS 5i is an entry level controller that does not support Raid.
SAS 5ir adds basic RAID support of level 0 and 1 arrays supporting a total of 4 hard drives.
SAS 6ir includes the basic RAID support of level 0 and 1 arrays but can control up to 10 hard drives and doubles the PCIe interface bandwidth of the SAS 5ir by using a x8 connection for increased performance.
PERC 5i has RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, 50, and 0+1 to offer plus 256MB of battery backed cache to improve performance through use of a Write-Back cache policy. This allows the RAID controller to send the data transfer completion signal to the host when the controller cache has received all the data in a transaction. Versus sending the data transfer completion signal once the data is written to the much slower storage device. The controller then writes the cached data to the storage device in the background freeing up resources and improving performance.
PERC 6i includes the 256MB of battery backed cache but increases RAID level options to 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60, and 0+1 to meet a broader range of fault tolerance and performance needs.
